Returning to Silent Hill
The 30-minute livestream mainly showcased Silent Hill 2 gameplay. James Sunderland’s trek through the claustrophobic halls is still as harrowing as it was almost 2 decades ago. “I think the biggest challenge we had was how to make the game approachable to newcomers who have not played the original. But at the same time, to retain the familiarity of the game that players remember from 20 years ago,” said Lead Producer, Maciej Glomb of Bloober Team. The team describes their process of trying to be as faithful to the original, but at the same time modernizing it. The game will be in third-person compared to the fixed camera the original had. The higher sense of control means a different approach to trying to scare the players and Bloober Team has been doing their best to recapture those scares.
As his character has been long lauded as one of the best survival-horror protagonists, this version of James has a lot to live up to. “So, he is not an action hero by any means. He is a guy who is just a little lost at the top of his game. He is, to a greater extent, in a bewildered state so it’s very interesting charting his journey,” said Luke Roberts, who plays James Sunderland.
