The next chapter in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series has been revealed. Assassin’s Creed Shadows has players in the role of real-life historical figure, Yasuke, and a Japanese shinobi, Naoe, a 17-year-old from Iga and the daughter of one of the era’s most iconic shinobi, Fujibayashi Nagato, The Sengoku-era fantasy action game will release on November 15, 2024.
“Ubisoft Quebec’s focus throughout the development of Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been to fulfill two iconic player fantasies – shinobi and samurai – and ensure that its late-Sengoku period setting, known for its political tumult, warfare, and dramatic social reformation, serves as an authentic backdrop for the pair,” said Ubisoft in the press release for the game.
The Sengoku Jidai or the Warring States period was a time of intense civil war in Japan which ended with Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582), Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-1598), and Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) unifying Japan. Ubisoft Quebec went to great lengths consulting source documentation and building a network of expert historians, professors, and cultural consultants to help the team build a world as authentically as possible.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows see the two protagonists, Yasuke and Naoe, brought together by Nobunaga on opposing sides of Second Tenshō Iga War. The game will introduce a number of innovations to the series – including changing seasons and the use of light and shadow, both of which factor into its gameplay. Ubisoft has built the game “with the goal of letting players get lost within it – and as both Naoe and Yasuke, players will have new, unique ways to connect with the beauty that surrounds them.”
The game will come in Standard, Gold, Ultimate, and Collector Editions. Players who preorder the game will be able to avail of the quest: “Thrown to the Dogs”. A Season Pass featuring 2 Expansions will also be available for purchase and is included in the Gold Edition and above. The Ultimate Edition will feature the Sekiryu character and hideout pack, alongside other bonuses. Finally, the Collectors Edition, alongside a Steelbook, a Hardcover artbook, and various physical goods, will feature a Naoe and Yasuke dual character statue.
